It’s Not What You Can Do, It’s What You Believe You Can Do (Part 1)

by Matt Wadsworth on 15/09/2010

Hi all,

Apologies for the 3 month absence. It’s been a busy time over at Wadsworth HQ, as my business is growing rapidly and the weeks have literally flown by.

Over the summer I took a 2 week holiday in Thailand. This was my first time in Asia, and let me tell you, it won’t be the last.

While we were there, my girlfriend and I spent about 5 days on an island called Koh Phi Phi, which is about a 2 hour boat ride off the South-East coast of Thailand.

One thing I love about traveling, is that it makes you more open to other people.

So as we were crossing from the mainland to the island, I got talking to a chap from the UK who told me he was a scuba diving instructor.

Never having dived before, I asked him if he thought it would be a worth-while experience for a blind guy to go diving.

To my surprise, he said he thought it definitely would be, so the day after we arrived, I went straight down to the dive center and booked myself in for a Discover Scuba Diving trip.

Let me tell you, it was an absolutely amazing experience. So much so, that I decided to go all-the-way, and get my SSI Scuba Diving license, which involved another 2 days intensive training.

Now you might be asking yourself, what’s the point of going scuba diving if you can’t see what’s down there, especially as you can’t go around touching the coral and stroking sharks?

Well, as one of my old mentors told me about 20 years ago, “If you don’t try, you don’t know,” and this is the way I do things folks.

I love challenges, I love new experiences, and I love having licenses for things which other people (through no fault of their own) think I shouldn’t be able to do.

Breathing under water, and experiencing the sensation of weightlessness would have been enough for me in and of itself; however, there was much more to it than that.

The guys down at the dive center had never taken a blind person diving before, and I wanted it to be an awesome experience for them as well.

We worked out a bunch of tapping signals to replace the visual hand signs (you can’t talk under water), and my brilliant instructor Mckenna, swam above me and held on to my tank as we swam.

The only thing I couldn’t do was read my pressure gage, which tells you how much air you have left, and at what depth you are swimming, so I was reliant on Mckenna for that.

I’ve since discovered however that you can get talking dive computers, so, problem solved.

So why am I telling you all this, and more importantly, how can it help you?

Well, I’ve been thinking hard about what I can bring to our little community that will have a massive impact on people.

To be honest, I hate the thought of bringing out your typical “IM Course.” There are hundreds of them out there already, some excellent, most of them garbage… and yet, well over 90% of people who try and make money online end up banging their head against a brick wall.

You see, there is a huge market for systems and methods, not only in the IM world, but in betting trading, Forex, and just about anything else to do with making money.

I hear it so often from people, “If I could just find the right system… I just want a simple system, then everything would be OK.”

Folks, systems are great, and I use many of them myself in my own business.

Systems, however, are not the key to the kingdom… it’s something else…

Something much more fundamental and infinitely more powerful than any system out there.

Feel free to hazard a guess below, and I’ll reveal all in part 2.

Warmly,

-Matt

Proper mind set is the most important ingredient to success. Self talk can take you to heights never before imagined or plummet you to depths you never thought you would hit.

Great post Matt!

Hi Matt,
I found you through another internet marketer. I would have emailed you this, except there’s no form on your site. Hey, I was wondering if you would be up for some mentoring, or at least some suggestions as to where I should go. I’m a blind internet marketer too, so it’s not the “take action” or “have the right mindset” like it is for most people. I need help with the visual stuff; you know what I mean? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

WOW!! Amazing!! I don’t even know how to swim!! You challenge A LOT of us, Matt!!!!!!!!!

Hi Matt,
Much admiration from Brighton.. I love the attitude of If you don’t try you wont know… too many of us are to scared to take the initial step and once we do discover it wasn’t that scary at all.

As sales trainer of mine used to say – Do what you fear most and it isn’t that scary.

Hi Matt,

Your statement about what you “BELIEVE” that you can do is more important than the how or the what parts of the equation. It is still the “WHY” that matters most!

This article really resonated since I just watched this TED talk recently which I think you will find very useful to watch (only 20 mins) really worth the time

http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html

You can of have all the systems, right market conditions, Capital, the right people…however if you donot have the belief which comes from the “WHY” everything is in vain. I know I probably sound airy fairy but it really does boil down to this.

Looking forward to hear your take on the situation Matt!

Hey matt
That is awesome.
and inspiring.

Yep – integrity and honesty. You can sell ice to the Eskimos if the Eskimos like you, trust you and think you know a lot about ice.

I think it is the desire and determination to succeed. A simple system is all well and good, but it is only as good as the person who uses it and implements the steps.

Yeah I think I know, actually there are a few. One of them is self belief basically as a man thinkith so he is yaddy yaddy yadda.

The other is focus and not thinking that there IS a magic system out there. I think it is referred to as shiny object syndrome. In other words lack of focus.

I have to admit I fall victim to the shiny object syndrome now and then. In fact, only this week I was taken by another product launch in this industry, one of the numerous that seem to occur every week. This was heralded as a truly new and un heard of traffic generation techniques.

They had a trial offer period so I though I’ll take them up on that.

Now it did have about 4 million up sells which I did not take, I only opted for the base product.

And I would have to say, on one hand, that I was disappointed and on the other elated. I will explain.

I was disappointed in the product because the traffic generation methods outlined in the product were nothing really new. I new about 95% of them which is why I was elated because I realised that I do know this stuff. It is just a matter of knuckling down and focusing. I really have no excuse. In fact, as Chris Remple pointed out a while ago in reference to you, that anyone doing internet marketing now has no excuse.

Hi Matt,

It’s unbelievable! Life is never be the same again if you have courage to be a “life adventurer”. Well done! I’ll wait the part 2.

Matt,

Great post and a really welcome reminder on so many levels.

I suspect that the ’something else’ is our MINDSET.

I’ve seen many people (including myself at times) not succeed despite having the best/most up to date/expensive ’systems’.

Yet others who haven’t had those same resources achieved amazing results with basically just a pencil. (Well, maybe a little more than the humble HB, but you get what I mean :o ) )

Again Matt, thanks for the post.

Hi Matt,

I think it is trust.

Firstly trusting yourself and your own ability to do what other people have done, in spite of any advantage they may have had which might have made it easier for them.

Second: trusting your teacher, and their desire to help you achieve your goals, that they have your best interests at heart, and have the knowledge and experience to guide you safely, adapting the system to your unique circumstances.

Third – trusting the equipment, principles, technology – that the very idea of what you are doing makes logical sense.

Without trust you would not have gone scuba diving

Karen 16/09/2010 at 12:54 am

Hi Matt,

I think the subject of your recent email gave the answer away. I think the “keys to the kingdom” you are referring to is Belief. Believing you can actually achieve your goal.

Congrats on your Scuba Diving achievements as well.

All the best,

Karen

So impressed by your diving story Matt Congratulations! It was mesmerising.

Matt, you say “It’s Not What You Can Do, It’s What You Believe You Can Do” …. It sounds like part 2 will be about ’self belief’?

Seems that most business is 95% confidence and very little else. Sure one needs a good idea & product, a USP and good systems, but unless one has that confidence and takes action, nothing happens … true? BUT how to get to that confident state? Looking forward to your advice on this. Need some of that magic Matt ‘juice’ right now.

I feel that believing in ourselves is the key…that we can carry out whatever it is we have the desire to do. The systems are great and handy, but we are the ones who implement that system. When we transfer the responsibility of our success to the system, it’s too easy to say that it was the system’s fault, and not ours.

Greg R. 15/09/2010 at 9:53 pm

Matt,
You are such an inspiration to me. I have always admired your spirit. Keep up the good work.

Nick Brighton 15/09/2010 at 9:46 pm

Mental attitude. What do I win Matt? hehe, only kidding. Although, my answer remains, mental attitude is the real secret.

That, and being able to take what you need from one system and apply it in a way that suits your style and your master plan.

The problem is, most people in this industry have been conditioned into a lazy, done for you level of service. Few of the remaining survivors are willing to learn and take risks.

It’s tough – working for weeks on end and ending up with little to no sales. But that’s the reality which kills most people, and at best sets them into the “the next product has to work, I’m not going through that again” mentality.

I partly blame the junk misleading products out there, but I also realize how tough it can be to keep yourself on track and positive when you’re working alone with no outside support in this game.

But hey, if you want that level of freedom and income, nobody is gonna hand it to you on a plate, right?

Congrats on the Scuba venture… I went once and it’s a scary but fun experience.

Gary 15/09/2010 at 9:33 pm

Hi Matt,
Wow, you really blew me away with the fact that you can scuba dive. Way to go my friend. You are truly an inspiration to all! I love it…

You spoke of the keys to the kingdom and that systems are good but not the biggest factor involved. I may be wrong and you can correct me if I am, but my opinion about what is more powerful is what you(or we) think in our thoughts about what we can and can’t do or achieve, so my guess is a well defined, clear and positive MINDSET…

I do look forward to part 2…

Take care,
Gary

Ron 15/09/2010 at 9:12 pm

Hi Matt
Maybe it’s the willingness to follow through with a system until you get the results you want?

Peggy Hurd 15/09/2010 at 9:01 pm

The “system” you need to succeed is your Belief System.
