Matt Wadsworth’s Twenty Rules For Success

by Matt Wadsworth on 30/05/2011

Here are the twenty principles I use to “make stuff happen” on a day to day Basis.

Feel free to share your own in the comments below.

1. Get out of your comfort zone.

2. Get over your own resistance by defining the worse case scenario.

3. Focus on the results you want to have happen, not the processes which will get you there.

4. Take decisive action.

5. Be clear about what you want.

6. Never expect life to owe you anything.

7. Solve your own problems.

8. Don’t take yourself too seriously all the time.

9. Work at things you enjoy and which are worthy of your time and talent.

10. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

11. Become the most positive person you know.

12. Be generous.

13. Take things a day at a time and persist.

14. Treat everyone you meet the way you want to be treated.

15. Commit yourself to constant improvement.

16. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, but on experiences and relationships with the people you love.

17. Take responsibility for yourself and for every area of your life.

18. Be bold and courageous.

19. Look after the people around you.

20. Never ever give up.

Thanks Matt, I love it!
You are one of the most positively motivated people who I get emails from – this has made my day… I will use this to keep focused!

@ Matt, thanks for blog and the list. I like the idea of using the list regularly. It renews things I tend to take for granted and so they slip in the background of my conscious mind. Eventually I forget about the value that certain ones can have to my life or my day to day interaction with people.
btw, your list is predicated on ‘getting things done’ as far as I can see – and not just clichéd.
Keep up the great work.

@ Matt: I agree ENTIRELY – and that is what I was trying to say. I’ve kept a personal copy to re-read once and a while and keep me on the “straight and narrow”

@Eduardo: Glad you found the list useful.

@Alan: A huge problem I see is that people are always looking for something “startlingly new”.

I prefer to do and use what is proven to work in order to get me where I want to go.

Hi Matt, I like your list, it’s inspiring. I don’t have a list of my own, but’ll take your’s as mine, thanks.

I disagree with Pat. There may be nothing startlingly new in Matt’s “20 principles”, but that doesn’t make them bad or invalid. And sometimes it does us the world of good to be reminded, “not to take ourselves too seriously” or “to give people more than they expect” – or whichever strikes a chord with the reader at the time. Something probably will, and I think that’s possibly the objective…

Hi Pat,

I don’t have a problem with cliches to be honest as long as they are useful.

As for “not being about getting things done”, take a look at a few here from the list:

9. Work at things you enjoy and which are worthy of your time and talent.

13. Take things a day at a time and persist.

15. Commit yourself to constant improvement.

17. Take responsibility for yourself and for every area of your life.

18. Be bold and courageous.

20. Never ever give up.

Got any suggestions Pat?

Matt

I liked the title of your post that I clicked through, but was left disappointed. Too many trite cliches – treat others how you want to be treated etc. Not really about getting things done..
